The Plains Indians considered all life on earth to be sacred. They offered prayers for others and expressed gratitude for everything in their lives everyday. They thought that the Earth was the grand-mother for everything while the Creator or Manitou was the grand-father for everything. Thanks were given to the Sun, Moon, and the wind in all 4 directions. They understood that they shared the Earth with animals, plants, and rocks. When hunting, they asked permission beforehand and thanked the animal for sacrificing its life. No part of an animal was wasted when killed due to the respect of the animal.
